Five areas, weighted the way the exam weighs them
Origination activities and federal law make up half the test. We build your study plan around those weights, so time goes where the points are.
- Federal Mortgage-Related Laws24% · ~28 questions
- Uniform State Content11% · ~13 questions
- General Mortgage Knowledge20% · ~23 questions
- Mortgage Loan Origination Activities27% · ~31 questions
- Ethics18% · ~21 questions
Know where you stand in every content area
Your Readiness Map shows each part of the exam as a row of topics. Every topic is marked not started, needs review, building, or solid, based on how you answer its questions across study sessions.
The ring is your overall readiness, weighted the same way the exam is weighted, so progress in origination counts for more than progress in state content. Topics that need review come first in your suggestions, so you spend time where it helps most.

Questions about the exam
How many questions are on the SAFE MLO Test?
120 multiple-choice questions. 115 count toward your score, and 5 are unscored pretest questions mixed in at random, so treat every question as if it counts.
How long is the test, and what score do I need?
You get 190 minutes of testing time inside a 225-minute appointment. You need 75% to pass, which is at least 87 of the 115 scored questions.
Is there a separate state test?
No. The Uniform State Content is built into the national test, so you pass one exam and it meets the testing requirement for state licensing.
Does PassMLO count toward my 20 hours of pre-licensing education?
No. PassMLO is exam prep, not NMLS-approved pre-licensing education. You still need to complete 20 hours of approved pre-licensing courses before you test.
Where do your answers come from?
Every lesson and question is checked against the primary source: the federal regulations on eCFR and the CFPB site, HUD, and NMLS's own content outline. Each explanation shows its citation so you can check it yourself.
Can I study on my phone?
Yes. Every page, quiz, and the exam simulator work on phones, tablets, and computers, and your progress follows you between devices.
